Let's Talk About Supercapacitors!

Supercapacitor

You ever heard of a supercapacitor? To put it simply, think of it like a cousin to a regular capacitor. Now, what's a capacitor, you ask? Well, it's like a little storage unit for electricity, holding onto those tiny electrons. They usually show up in devices powered by electricity. Now, a supercapacitor, as the name suggests, takes things up a notch. It can handle more electricity than your typical capacitor, which is why we call it "super."

Now, let's get into how these bad boys actually work. Imagine a double-layer electrode in a supercapacitor. It's a bit like those lithium-ion batteries, but they've got only one electrode layer. The supercapacitor, on the other hand, uses active carbon electrodes on both the anode and cathode sides. These active carbon electrodes step in to deal with ions, like lithium or sodium. When the voltage is on, the positive ions head to the negative active electrode, and the negative ions move to the positive active carbon electrode. That's how it charges up. When the voltage switches off, those plus and minus ions hang out in the electrolyte.

Now, here's the fascinating part - when those ions move to the active carbon electrode, they're basically physically attracted to it. This is what sets supercapacitors apart. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which rely on chemical reactions as lithium moves around during oxdiation, supercapacitors work purely with electrictiy. You know how fast electricitiy can go, right? It's lightning quick and can handle higher voltages. That's why supercapacitors can charge up faster and deliver more power compared to other batteries. That's why they're a hit in industries that need speed and power, like construction machinery, wind power systems, and EVs.

Have you ever heard of a supercapacitor? to easily understand it, you should know what capacitor means. Capacitor can store electricity(like electrons). So, capacitor is mostly used to devices that work by electric power. Supercapacitor means it can take more electricity than the normal capacitor. That's why it is called super, supercapacitor.

Let's dive in how they work. The supercapacitor has double-layer electrode. Think about lithiumion battery. They have only one-layer electrode. The supercapacitor lay active carbon electrodes on an electrode in both anode and cathode. The active carbon electrode comes in play to take ion(lithium or sodium). For example, when voltage is on, +(plus) ion moves to -(minus) active electrode and - ion moves to + active carbon electrode. That is charging. When voltage is off, +,- ions float in electrolyte.

Here is the matter - When ions move to the active carbon electrode, the active carbon electrode basically physically bring ions to themselves. This is really interesting part and unique features of the supercapacitor. Usually, Lithiumion battery works with chemical reactions like lithium moves when it is oxided. But, the supercapacitor works with electric reaction. You know, electrics goes really faster and can take more voltage. It means the supercapacitor can charge faster and spend more power than other batteries. So, the supercapacitor are used to some industries that need fast and powerful stuff, such as construction machines, wind powers and EV cars.
