Books in the Digital Age: A Casual Chat

Hey there! So, how many books have you managed to dive into this year? One or two, or perhaps none at all? It's crazy how with the rise of Netflix, Youtube, Insagram, and all that jazz, people seem to have forgotten the joy of cracking open a good book. I mean, let's face it, reading a whole book can feel like a marathon these days when we're so used to scrolling through one-sentence comments on Youtube.

By the way, I'm the CEO over at 민음사, and we're pretty well-known for bringing some awesome world literature to Korea. You know, I've been hearing a lot of buzz about the book industry taking a nosedive lately, especially with the rise of e-books. But you know what? We've still got out loyal leaders who can't get enough of physical books. They buy'em, they collect'em, and our revenue's been holding steady for a good decade now.

It's funny, though. People often think that making money from books just doesn't add up. Books are like sacred treasures to them. But let's be real, we need to keep the wheels turning in this industry if we want to keep publishing those gems and support out taleneted writers and bookstores. Gotta find those margins, even if they're just a tad, right?

Speaking of bookstores, they've got their own set of challenges. Managing the diverse range of books can be a costly affair, and it's not like you can replace humans with robots here. It's a different ballgame compared to other industries. The future might be a bit uncertain, but I'm determined to find a way to keep this book business rolling. Got any thoughts on how we can tackle this together?

How many books have you read in this year? 1 or 2 or more? maybe not at all. Since Netflix, Youtube, Instgram and more comes in to our life, people've forgotten how to read books. It takes so long to finish a book. But, people've got used to reading only one sentence in comments on Youtube. They can't stand up for waiting untill 300 pages turn over.

I'm a CEO of 민음사. We're well known for a publisher with world literatural books in Korea. I've heard a lot of noise that publishing books industry would go down deep in B12(basment). And even electric books've come in this game to compete. But, we have still readers who keep reading books. They buy a lot of books and sometimes collect them for some reasons. So, our revenue's been stayed ok for a decade.

I think people think making money through selling books doens't make sense. Books are like holy to them. But, how on earth is something not affected by capitalism? we can publish better books only if we can make margins even a little to pay for writers and bookstores.

Bookstores've been challenging with books upkeep. Books are so various that storing them in the store cost a lot. You need human's hands to manage bookstores, which means it would cost more than other industries. I do not know what the future looks like but I'm gonna figure out some way to overcome this stopped business.
